To understand the holy Book of Islam, having a sound knowledge of Arabic Language and Literature particularly ancient texts is paramount. 19th Century. Although there are a number of books on a literary genre Hamasah, the anthology of Abu Tammam is widely appreciated and adopted in the curricula of Arabic language. Kitab al-Hamasah is divided into ten books and the second book deals with Marasi “Elegies” and the book of Maulana Farman Nepali deals with this very book of Kitab al-Hamasah. The anthology contains a total of 884 poems, most of which are short extracts of longer poems, grouped by subject matter. The selections date back to pre-Islamic, Islamic and early ‘Abbasid times. It has the status of a classic work.

I Am Mohammad Khalid Nadeem Budauni https://urdu.muslimsofindia.com/2022/08/31/i-am-mohammad-khalid-nadeem-budauni/ https://urdu.muslimsofindia.com/2022/08/31/i-am-mohammad-khalid-nadeem-budauni/#respond Wed, 31 Aug 2022 10:33:54 +0000 https://urdu.muslimsofindia.com/?p=1645

My name is Khalid Nadeem Budauni. My father was Abdul Majid Siddiqui. I was born in Mohalla Sahukara Gate, Budaun on 15th June, 1958. I was brought up and nurtured by my grandfather Late Abdul Hadi Siddiqui and Phuphi Shamim Bano. My father was Head Constable of Police, so he resided outside due to his employment. I got my primary education in Madrasa Aaliya Qadriya, Budaun under guidance of my grandfather and Phuphi. Thereafter, I passed the Intermediate exam from Islamia Inter College, Budaun and completed Masters in Urdu from Rohilkhand University, Bareilly U.P. and got associated with the Department of Primary Education (Basic Education, U.P. Government) as a teacher after completing B.T.C. I met with my respected teacher Late Shafi Ahmad Khan ‘Payam Kakralvi’ in 1974 while I was studying in Islamia Inter College. I was fortunate enough to receive guidance in Urdu Poetry from Payam Sb. Dr Asad Budauni, Husain Ahmad Farid Chand Sheikhupuri and Khalid Budauni (Resident of Biri 92).

It was the age of nurturing literature and realm of poesy. There were prominent poets, in whose presence I recited poems frequently in poetry symposiums and I was blessed to acquaint myself with literary nuances and subtleties. I also launched an Urdu Magazine “Monthly Roshan”, which could last only for three years. However, my love for poetry pursuits continued advancing. I could avail the training of the respected Teacher only for four springs but my endeavors continue till date. To which extent I have succeeded, it may be judged by the men of letters.

I am eldest of six brothers. By the grace of God (AST) my mother is alive but my father passed away eighteen years back. My three brothers are settled with their businesses in Delhi. The names of my brother respectively are as follow: Mohammad Tariq, Mohammad Aleem, Mohammad Kaleem, Mohammad Yusuf and Mohammad Azeem.

I got married in 1980 to my cousin Ambar Jahan and blessed with five sons. All the Five sons Mohammad Imran, Mohammad Irfan, Mohammad Rizwan, Mohammad Faizan and Mohammad Saud are settled in Mumbai with their businesses. All praise be to the Almighty Allah, my four sons have got married but one son is yet to be married. Unfortunately, I do not have any daughter.

That apart, I am serving language and literature as a servant of a literary organization “Fankaar Academy, Budaun”. My following books have been published or going to be published.

(1)    Muhsin-e-Kaunanin (Naat Collection),

(2)    Zad-e-Akhirat (Naat Collection),

(3)    Anware Karbala (Manaqib Collection),

(4)    Anwar-e-Sabir (Manaqib Collection),

(5)    Shan-e-Ala Hazrat (Manaqib Collection)

(6)    Anwar-e-Usaid (Manaqib Collection),

(7)    Fankar Academy Ke Tarhi Mushaire

(8)    Taqleed-e-Hassan (under publication),

(9)    Ghazal Collection (under preparation),

(10) Fankar Academy Ke Online Tarahi Mushaire

(11) Anwar-e-Saleheen (Under publication).

Dr Siraj Ajmali, Naz Pratapgarhi, Afsar Amrohvi, Samar Budauni, Dr. Sohrab Kakralvi, Dr Ilyas Naved Gunnauri, Wasiq Pusganvi and a host of other literary personalities have expressed their impressions on my works. I have attended numerous poetry symposiums and gatherings (Mushaira). I have also participated in All India Mushaira of Bangaluru, Agra, Mumbai, Aligarh, Delhi, Varanasi, Lucknow and Bareilly. I am deeply associated with some of the contemporary poets, Riyaz Saghar, Hameed Gauhar, Jalil Nizami Hyderabad, Zahoor Zahirabadi, Alok Shrivastava, Sagar Tripathi, Alam Nizami, Shakir Husain Islahi, Ishrat Saghir Shahjahanpuri, Noor Kakralvi, Fahmi Budauni and others. (Khalid Nadeem)

I would like to share one of anecdotes pertaining to my journey into the realm of creativity and poesy. I was at the start of my initiation in the world of poesy in the poetic classes of my mentor and teacher. One stanza of Ghazal was the subject of composing other stanzas on this very pattern. The respected teacher asked me and Asad Budauni and Husain Faridi Chand to compose couplets on this pattern. The respected teacher was inhaling Hukkah and we were engaged in composing couplets on this pattern. I (Khalid Nadeem) succeeded in composing a couplet within three – four minutes and presented the same to the respected teacher. My other fellows also composed couplets but my stanzas were preferred and all other persons endorsed it. That lyric (ghazal) was given to a budding poet Zamirullah Budauni. The couplet to be imitated was:

The shadow shall remember the tiredness of the traveler   سائے کو مسافر کی تھکن یاد رہے گی

My literary composition on this was:

The shadow accompanied the traveler immensely سائے نے مسافر کا بڑا ساتھ دیا تھا
The shadow shall remember the tiredness of the traveler سائے کو مسافر کی تھکن یاد رہے گی

The immediacy of the stanza puzzled even Dr Asad Budauni despite being one year senior to me. I was honored to attend my first poetry symposium in presence of my respected teacher. On the third day of the demise of Abr Ahsani Gunnauri, one All India Mushaira was convened, which was attended by more than 80 poets and this Mushaira lasted for two complete days. I (Khalid Nadeem) was on the eighteenth number of the list of the first day. My ghazal garnered immense success. Subsequently, I got opportunity to vent my feelings in poesy in the poetry symposiums at Moradabad and Rampur when invited. My poetry lineage reads as below:

  • Shafi Ahmad Khan Payam Kakralvi
  • Abr Ahsani Gunnauri
  • Ahsan Marehravi
  • Dagh Dehlavi

I belong to the eighteenth generation of my ancestors in view of settlement in Budaun. My great ancestor Hakeem Muhammad accompanied the father of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya when he migrated here from Mashhad-e-Muqaddas to preach Islam. The illuminating tomb of Hazrat Syed Ahmad Bukhari Mashhadi is still in existence at Sagar Taal, Mohalla Khera Nawada in Budaun, which is visited by masses.

At present, some poets of Budaun migrated from here and some others have passed away. There is dearth of poets in Budaun nowadays. Sadiq Alapuri, Samar Budauni, Ayyub Budauni, Dr. Shadab Zaki, Anwar Qasmi, Raunaq Rahi, Surendra Kumar Naaz, Dr. Pramod Darpan are continuing the glorious tradition of literature and all of them have appreciated me in glowing words. Fankaar Academy, a brain child of mine (Khalid Nadeem) aged 20 years now, organizes on regular basis poetry symposiums and get-togethers and the literary Carwan continues its journey to the destiny.

The illness has taken toll on me (Khalid Nadeem) and I have not remained as strong as I would have been in the past and it has impacted the movement as well. Now I have more concerns to get my books and that of my friends published and nothing else concerns me greatly right now. I seek blessing from the Almighty God for achieving these targets.

Many organizations have honored me with awards. I attended twice in the poetry symposium of Urdu Academy, Uttar Pradesh. I (Khalid Nadeem) frequently face the audience through Radio & Doordarshan Kendra Rampur and Bareilly and Lucknow. I have chaired several poetry symposiums too. Currently I am posting my Video collection on my YouTube channel and Facebook account. I recited my works Online numerous times during lockdowns and I do it constantly every second or third day by the Grace of Allah Subhanahu wa Taala.

Awami Idara Urdu library Mumbai Has a Glorious Past https://urdu.muslimsofindia.com/2021/03/22/awami-idara-urdu-library-mumbai-has-a-glorious-past/ https://urdu.muslimsofindia.com/2021/03/22/awami-idara-urdu-library-mumbai-has-a-glorious-past/#respond Mon, 22 Mar 2021 04:18:11 +0000 https://urdu.muslimsofindia.com/?p=996

Past the monsoon puddles and rows of ramshackle houses, sits an old two-storied decrepit building. Inside, old men bend over a table where albums of photographs, many barely surviving the ravages of time, are scattered. They pick up a black-and-white group photo and try to identify themselves. Young, dreamy-eyed boys fed on the heavy gruel of Marxism, they look eager for newness and change. A change which many say remained a chimera.

The old men are members of Awami Idara, a library-cum-cultural centre of the mill workers of Muslim quarter of Mominpura, Madanpura, Kalapani and Sankli street in Central Mumbai. Like the men, the Idara too is a shadow of its former self.

Gone are stirring speeches, the passionate poetry which instigated workers of the world to unite and break the chains of capitalism. Since capitalism rules the roost everywhere, the old comrades at Awami Idara too have reconciled to it. Recently the Idara called some leading Urdu writers of Mumbai, appealing to them to save one of few relics of the city’s `progressive’ past.

“It is difficult to engage the youth for a communist cause,” rues Javed Kamil Idara’s secretary. Perhaps Mumbai’s only Urdu library founded (1952) and run entirely by mill workers, Idara was, for decades, a Mecca for mill workers. After toiling at their looms and spinning machines, the workers repaired to the Idara to read, listen to writers and watch plays of Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA).

Abdul Qadir, 67, was member of the IPTA’s troupe and still remembers a few stirring songs. “Much before Prem Dhawan and Kaifi Azmi became popular lyricists, they would pen songs for us. We looked upon them as our ideals,” recalls Qadir who, after a stint in the Air Force, has dedicated himself to the Idara. It was Kaifi who had named the then small, fledgling library Awami Idara (public institution). Since it was a hub of communist writers and intellectuals, the Idara naturally came close to the House of Soviet Culture, the former USSR’s propaganda wing in Mumbai. The culture house helped the Idara in several ways, including lending it a projector and a screen to show Russian films to the toiling, mostly hungry masses.

Members recall the huge crowd at film screenings at the Idara. After the USSR suffered the seismic pulls of perestroika and glasnost in the 1990s and its culture house in Mumbai closed down, the Idara received a letter reminding it to return the projector and the screen to its owner.

“The projector was lent to us when USSR was alive. We will return it after communism is back in Russia,” tersely replied Idara’s the then secretary Comrade Maqsood. Poet Abdul Ahad Saaz remembers attending mushairas and soirees as a child. “Then mushairas at Awami Idara attracted big names like Kaifi, Majrooh, Sardar Jafri and Sahir Ludhianvi. Now these are things of the past,” says Saaz.

Just as heated discussions and grooming of idealists through progressive ideas and literature are. Writer-journalist Sajid Rashid was a regular visitor to the library in the 1970s. “If I had not visited Idara so religiously, perhaps I would never have become a writer,” admits Rashid, a classmate of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim at Ahmed Sailor High School in Nagpada area. Rashid says while progressive literature saved him, it didn’t attract Dawood who gradually drifted to the world of crime.

Interestingly, Idara has sailed against the tides of a different kind. It grew amidst hordes hamlets populated by the Ahle Hadees who practise a puritanical Islam, dreaming to restore the faith to its pristine glory. The essentially Godless Idara never clashed with the Ahle Hadees who have a massive mosque in the vicinity, built with a generous endowment of a Saudi King. Rashid says the Idara faded also because it came under the influence of the orthodox. But the Idara’s members swear by communism.

“We never discuss religion here. Both the communists and the orthodox have worked together,” claims Idara’s bearded president Rashid Ahmed, even as loud sermon of a cleric from the nearby mosque drifts in the room.

More than religiosity, the eight-year-long strike led by trade unionist Datta Samant in the 1980s, spelt doom for the Idara.

Now being run with the donations from some of the boys who benefited from the Idara and are now well-settled in the Gulf, the Idara fights its ideological irrelevance through charity. It distributing books and notebooks among poor children and organises health camps. It holds talks and mushairas while Labour Day (May 1) is still a big day in its calendar. That day the red flag gets hoisted at the decrepit building even as a motley group of old and tired communists sing songs of revolution: “Jaaga naya insaan zamana badlega/Utha hai jo toofan zamana badlega (The new man has awaken to change the world/the rising storm will change the world.)

Attributing it, progressive writer Sajjad Zaheer had once likened the Idara with Taj Mahal of the Mazdoors (workers). In the Idara’s visitors’ book, celebrated writer-film director Khwaja Ahmed Abbas remarked on May 1, 1975: “The Idara will go higher than the soaring Qutub Minar.” Perhaps the Idara survives on such lofty dreams.

MAULANA KAIFUL HASAN QADRI, AUTHOR OF TANWIRUL QURAN https://urdu.muslimsofindia.com/2021/03/05/maulana-kaiful-hasan-qadri-author-of-tanwirul-quran/ https://urdu.muslimsofindia.com/2021/03/05/maulana-kaiful-hasan-qadri-author-of-tanwirul-quran/#respond Fri, 05 Mar 2021 04:01:52 +0000 https://urdu.muslimsofindia.com/?p=962

Maulana Kaiful Hasan Qadri is one of the contemporary Islamic Scholars and poets, who have been blessed by the unique intuition and vision of serving the eternal Book of Revelation – The Holy Quran. He has embarked on a journey of completing the translation of the Quran by Aala Hazrat, Ahmad Raza Khan Fazil-e-Barelvi Raziallahu Anho, Kanzul Iman and the exegesis of the Holy Book by Syed Mohammad Naimuddin Moradabadi Rahmatullah Alaih, Khazainul Irfan accompanied, which is an integral part of Kanzul Iman in the verse and he has managed to travel half of the journey so difficult to tread and less travelled. With this laurel to his credit, Maulana Kaiful Hasan Qadri has become one of those fortunate individuals who constitute the list of poets who rendered the translation and exegesis of the Holy Book in poetry of other languages. He has spent many years in teaching the Islamic Sciences in various Islamic seminaries in India while pursuing his instinct of poetry versifying on a number of subjects in various genres.

Early Life and Family

Maulana Kaiful Hasan Qadri, original name Hafiz Arshad, was born in a small hamlet Bara Buzurg, Panchayat Atrar, block Aurai, District Muzaffarpur in a Sheikh Siddiqui Family in 1975 AD. His father’s name is Abdul Jabbar and mother Shakila Khatoon. His grandfather was Sheikh Yusuf son of Zahruddin. His Phopha, Habib son of Nizamuddin and Phuphi were childless so they brought him up and arranged for his proper education but he left for heavenly abode when Maulana Kaiful Hasan Qadri was in his tender age itself. One of his family ladies namely Batulan also has a special place in his life during childhood. His maternal family lived in Rudauli of Sitamarhi District of Bihar, which was more prosperous and happened to be his matrimonial home as well because his maternal grandfather and mother engaged the daughter of their son Hafiz Abdussalam to Maulana Kaiful Hasan Qadri, who happily got married to him and the couple was blessed with four daughters and three sons.

The eldest son Mohammad Rashid was born in 1422H and then Mohammad Hamid in 1424H. Both Mohammad Rashid and Mohammad Hamid are pursuing their studies now in the State of Kerala. The youngest son Mohammad Khalid joined them in 1434H. In the intervening period the couple was blessed with four daughters and all of them are studying in modern educational institutions acquiring Islamic learning and training at home, who, by grace of the Almighty Allah and His last Messenger Hazrat Muhammad Peace Be Upon him, shall spread the mission and vision of their parents In Sha Allah.

Maulana Kaiful Hasan Qadri discharged his obligation as an elder brother too like he served his mentor and proved an excellent householder. He has two brothers – Maulana Faizul Haq and Hafiz Saif Raza. Both the brothers got education and training under the guidance of his elder brother Maulana Kaiful Hasan Qadri and now they are rendering services in their respective fields.

Education:

Maulana Kaiful Hasan Qadri has particular association with Maqsudpur Aurai. His Phupha and Phuphi lived here, who being issueless, took special care of him. He got admitted in the Jamia Qadria, a renowned Islamic Seminary established by the famous Islamic Scholar and Mystic Mufti Aslam Razvi Qadri Rahmatullah Alaih. He studied here for three years from third grade to the fifth grade of the eight year curriculum of Dars-e-Nizami, which is normally taught in all madrasas of the subcontinent as well as in those Islamic institutions established by the Ulema of India, Pakistan and Bengaladesh elsewhere in the world. During this period, he strove hard in acquiring the Islamic sciences from the expert teachers in Jamia Qadria Maqsudpur particularly from its founder, who gave special attention to the class of Maulana Kaif teaching Tahrir-e-Sanbat, Isaguji and Sharahul Jami. The current rector of Jamia Qadria Maqsudpur, Maulana Mohammad Arshad s/o Mufti Mohammad Aslam Razvi was his classmate including Maulana Ozair and others. Before moving Varanasi to complete his Fazilat degree, he studied some time in a madrasa namely Khairiya Sasaram, Bihar and Jamia Qadria itself after Khairiya. It was a time, which brought a turning point in his life when he realized his poetry potential  while reading Diwan-e-Raza, which is the source of inspiration for many poets and he composed hamd for the first time in the year 1410H corresponding 1990 which continues till date.

The extra curriculum activities in Farooqiya Varanasi had enormously enriched his skills in writing and inspired to do better in future. The student association Anjuman Faiz-e-Raza convened biannual gathering in the name of Jashn-e-Faruqi and Jashn-e-Raza. In one of its functions he was rewarded the first prize in essay writing and Maulana Syed Asghar Imam Qadri, Principal, Jamia Faruqia Varanasi, one of syeds of Amjhar was so happy with his essays that he rewarded eleven rupees as a token of appreciation. The event has been very memorable for him. He completed his Madrasa education here. Another significant holy opportunity came to him when Maulana Sibtain Raza Khan Qadri, Bareilly Sharif visited Faruqia Varanasi and he took oath of allegiance to him. Maulana Kaiful Hasan Qadri has boundless affection and respect for his Pir-o-Mirshid. Among the eminent Ulema who taught him are Mufti Aslam Razvi, Maulana Nasimuddin Razvi, Maulana Faiyaz, Maulana Ghulam Mustafa, Maulana Nurul Huda from Purniya, Maulana Yahya of Bara, Maulana Saghir Ahmad Mauna, Qari Shahid, Hafiz Imran, Maulana Zillur Rahman, Hazrat Malikuzzafar, Mufti Syed Asghar Imam, Maulana Mohamamd Husain Qadri Bharaichi, Maulana Abdul Hadi Khan, Siddique Alam Qadri, Maulana Akhlaq, Maulana Taiyab and Maulana Kamal are to be mentioned.

Teaching and other career

Financial concerns have always haunted the students of lower middle class family. Maulana Kaif also was concerned to get a job to earn his livelihood immediately after completing his education.

Mr Qadri began his teaching career from an Islamic seminary in a village Satwanti Chaprang Bhabhua District, where he taught for a year. Then, he came to Syed Raja Chandauli a town in a vicinity of Varanasi near Police Station GT Road. He rendered his services here for some years. He worked as an Imam in the mosque too. Some of his students now are the veteran Ulema, some of them are Arsh Azam and Abdul Bari in the area serving Islam and humanity. Then, an offer was made to him from a Madrasa namely Anwar-e-Raza in Bhadli Azamgarh and he shifted from Syed Raja here. It is the place, where Mr. Qadri got inspiration to experience poetry bringing some name and fame to his credit.

While staying here, he chanced upon reading the versified translation of Surah Rehman and he tried to render the translation of Surah Yaseen and he succeeded. Encouraged by it, he completed the translation of Surah Yusuf and it became the starting point of his ground breaking project, Tanwirul Quran. He became committed to versify entire Kanzul Iman and Khazainul Irfan. He completed versifying Surah Fathia and Baqra in Varanasi.

He left Varanasi and shifted to Kolkata in Salimiya Kamarhati, where he pursued his ambition converting the verses into poetry during time he got after rendering his services as a teacher completing Surah Nisa. One year later he came to Singhachauri, then, Kalyar in Jahanabad as a teacher and Imam of a mosque. Because of odd conditions he could not work on his project and he faced many hardships in earning his livelihood. Even in the harshest time, he did not lose his heart and his target never drifted from his gaze.

For many years he worked at many places including Shakri, Gangti and Medidih on the advice of Mufti Aslam Razvi. Maulana Gulsher Misbahi and Hatim Raza working in Bareilly Sharif are among his prominent pupils of this era. He read Tafsire Kabir also from Mufti Aslam Sb, who accorded permission to him for imparting Islamic knowledge.

Since teaching in small madrasas has never been the source of sufficient income to meet the household necessities, he decided to try his hand at business. He started the works of printing cards etc after computer designing but it was not his destiny and the Almighty God had intended otherwise. One day when Hazrat (Mufti Aslam Razvi) knew about it, he called him and appointed him in his own Jamia, Jamia Qadria Maqsudpur as calligrapher. He continued serving the Jamia even after his glorious demise and he was appointed the editor of the magazine Irfan-e-Raza by the office bearers. The editorship of the magazine paved way for his extraordinary works in prose and poetry and when it could not survive, he was appointed a teacher in Jamia Qadria Maqsudpur.

His Prose and Poetry

One of the distinguished characteristics of Maulana Kaiful Hasan Qadri is that no one has been his mentor and teacher either in prose or poetry and his own academic and poetic instincts given by the Almighty God have guided him. Now about a dozen of works are to his credit.

Seerat-e-Sher-e-Bihar – Biography of Bihar’s Lion (Mufti Aslam Razvi Rahmatullahe Alaih)

We can see from the preceding paras that the founder of Jamia Qadria Maqsudpur Aurai has always been the staunch mentor and teacher of Maulana Kaif so his first work Seerat-e-Shere-Bihar deals with the life and work of the Hazrat Mufti Aslam Razvi, which saw the light of publication in 1429H during the very lifetime of the subject of biography and it is firsthand account of the Hazrat. He wrote asking him and sufficiently investigating otherwise. It does not cover entire of his life and every aspect, which is projected to be completed in other two volumes. Maulana Kaiful Hasan Qadri narrated the life of the Hazrat in verse as well in addition to rendering the same in the national language Hindi. He has also collected all the poem sand speeches delivered at the time of his Chahallum in a book at the instance of the sons of Mufti Sb Marhum.

Suraj Sahafat Ka

While Maulana Kaiful Hasan Qadri was the editor of Irfan-e-Raza, he rendered its editorial in verse on various topics. It is the collection of these articles in verse, which are a rarity.

Shan-e-Raisul Qalam

It is the collection of the biography of Allama Arshadul Qadri, an iconic Islamic Scholar of many facets, in verse. Some of its series were published in Rifaqat Magazine Patna, which is projected to be published after addition and revision in future.

Al-daulatul Makkia

He introduced “Al-daulatul Makkia in hundreds of verses, which were published in Mahnama Ala Hazrat, which infused new enthusiasm in its versifier to go ahead and reach new heights.

Ghazals

He experimented with the most famous of Urdu genres, Ghazal, wherein he composed pomes on the style of the most celebrated Urdu Poet, Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib naming it “Bar Zamin-e-Ghalib”. Another collection of his Ghazal is “Kaif-e-Sarmadi”. He named his collection of Naat “Nigah-e-Ishq-o-Masti and “Dil Phoolun Ki Basti”. He composed Tazmin on the poetry of Ala Hazrat as well.

His Magnum Opus Tanwirul Quran

Tanwirul Quran is an ambitious ongoing project envisioned by Maulana Kaiful Hasan Qadri and the half of the journey has already been travelled on the planned six milestones. Tanwirul Quran has to be completed in six volumes; its two volumes have already been published and endorsed by the most respected personalities and organizations of the Country. First volume consisted initial five paras of the Holy Book has been endorsed by the most distinguished family of Bareilly Sharif and the second one containing 6 to 10 paras has the honor of the endorsement from the respected family of scholars and Islamic mystics at Marehra Sharif. The third volume from 11 to 15 is going to be published soon.

Dr Aziz Ahsan, Karachi Pakistan has penned down a valuable and comprehensive introduction to the second volume of Tanwirul Quran. In the last of the treatise, he observes:

“I think, Mr. Kaif has not only attained the status of a researcher of high quality and a poet by birth by versifying the history of exegeses and the Interpreters of the Holy Book, his works in the field of Quranic Exegeses is the sublime destination of his academic and creative journey, for which he has marked six milestones, out of which he has already travelled two of them.”

In addition, a number of dignitaries of the subcontinent such as Maulana Mufti Muhammad Aslam Razvi, Mohamamd Akhtar Raza Khan Azhari, Syed Ghyasuddin Qadri Razvi from Kalpi Sharif, Muhammad Subhan Raza Subhani Miyan and others have appreciated this outstanding endeavor of Maulana Kaiful Hasan Qadri in prose and in poetry too. Since a separate treatise on Tanwirul Quran is being prepared, I would like to limit my words to the appreciation of Tanwirul Quran Dr Shujauddin Farooqui, former Professor of Aligarh made in his extensive and holistic introduction to the third volume of Tanwirul Quran:-

“The newcomer but a great experimenter in this field is our subject of appreciation, Allama Kaiful Hasan Qadri. He has embarked on this journey with all his ambitions and aspirations though he speaks with humility

اس ڈگر پر ناتواں کیف الحسن بھی چل پڑا

(The humble Kaiful Hasan too embarked on this journey)

Although, he considers himself a frail man in this tough endeavor but it seems to me that he is even stronger and more ambitions than others and this magnum opus of his is likely to surpass all other versified translation and exegeses of the Holy Book.”

And with prayer for his success in both the worlds, I conclude my words.

HOW MUHAMMAD SHAFI ALI KHAN BECAME BEKAL AND THEN UTASAHI? https://urdu.muslimsofindia.com/2020/12/03/how-muhammad-shafi-ali-khan-became-bekal-and-then-utasahi/ https://urdu.muslimsofindia.com/2020/12/03/how-muhammad-shafi-ali-khan-became-bekal-and-then-utasahi/#respond Thu, 03 Dec 2020 15:48:13 +0000 https://urdu.muslimsofindia.com/?p=889

It is most likely that many of us do not know the real name of Bekal Utsahi was Muhammad Shafi Ali Khan. Normally, there are some anecdotes, which are ascribed behind the surnames and nome de plume of the famous personalities. How Muhammad Shafi Ali Khan, who was born on First June, 1924 and left for heavenly abode on 3rd December, 2016, came to be known as Bekal Utsahi, it is interesting to know.

Bekal Warsi:

There is a town and Nagar Panchayat Dewa Sharif just 26 km north east of the Capital of Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow. It is famous for the shrine of Haji Waris Ali Shah, a Sufi Saint (1817-1905) founder of the Warsi Sufi Order. Dewa Sharif was placed as one among the prominent sites in Heritage Arc of UP. Muhammad Shafi Ali Khan used to visit the shrine of Hazrat Waris Ali Shah. He came here in 1945 and began to recite poems addressing him as Bekal Warsi. Shah Hafiz Pyare Miyan, a prominent personality there referring to a highly acclaimed poet Bedam Warsi proclaimed. “Bedam Gaya and Bekal Aaya” signifying that we have lost Bedam but we have blessed a poet like him, who may be known as Bekal. After this memorable happening, he changed his name as Bekal Warsi.

Bekal Utsahi:

Our poet Bekal Warsi was a staunch congressman and enthusiastic to spread secular values. In 1952, the founder of the modern secular democratic India, Jawaharlal Nehru visited Gonda. There was an election program of Indian National Congress. Muhammad Shafi Ali Khan Bekal Warsi welcomed his Prime Minister with his renowned poem “Kisan Bharat Ka”. Nehru felt the intense feelings of the universal poet and he did not control himself to express “Yeh Hamara Utsahi Shayar Hai” and he came to be known Bekal Utsahi in the literary world. Verily, Bekal Utasahi was our poet, poet of the People of Bharat in particular and humanity at large. His poem “Kisan Bharat Ka” rightly articulates his poetic expression and universal values, in which he names both Nazeer and Kabeer to signify the very idea of India. He feels the importance of both Ajmer and Kashi.

Razia Sajjad Zaheer: An Author and Translator https://urdu.muslimsofindia.com/2020/11/07/razia-sajjad-zaheer-an-author-and-translator/ https://urdu.muslimsofindia.com/2020/11/07/razia-sajjad-zaheer-an-author-and-translator/#respond Fri, 06 Nov 2020 19:08:35 +0000 https://urdu.muslimsofindia.com/?p=703

Razia Sajjad Zahir, wife of the Sajjad Zaheer was an author in Urdu and translator. She was born on 15th October, 1918 in Ajmer and left for heavenly abode on 18th December, 1979. She was also prominent member of the Progressive Writers Association. She was awarded the Uttar Pradesh Sahitya Akademi Award and Soviet Land Nehru Award. Her father was the principal of Ajmer Islamic College. She received an undergraduate degree in Ajmer and she obtained a postgraduate degree from Allahabad University. Razia obtained a postgraduate degree from Allahabad University. In the 1940s, Razia and her husband were in Bombay, where they were active in the cultural sphere, organizing weekly PWA soirees. She acknowledged the influence of the PWA in radicalizing her politics, and was among the activist women who were beginning to question “Gandhian ideologies of women’s nature and place.”

By 1948, Razia had four daughters, and her husband was in Pakistan at the behest of the Communist Party of India, which had supported the Partition of India. She moved to Lucknow with her daughters.

Career

In Lucknow, Razia began to teach, write and translate in order to earn a living. She translated about 40 books into Urdu. Her translation of Bertold Barechts’ Life of GAliloe to Urdu was called powerful. She translated Siyaram Sharan Gupta’s Nari (published as Aurat (Woman) by Sahitya Akademi), and Mulk Raj Anand’s Seven Years (Saat Saal, 1962).

In 1953, her novella Sar-e-Sham was published, Kante (Thorns, a novel) was released in 1954, while Suman (another novel) came out in 1964. She edited and published her husband’s letters to her from prison, Nuqush-e-Zindan (1954).

She worked on a novel on the poet Majaz Lucknowi, which remained unfinished. Along with her literary endeavors, she also edited and copied her husband’s writings.

Her short stories have been characterized as having a socialistic purpose. For example, in Neech (Lowborn) she explored class differences between a privileged woman and a fruit-seller, and the prejudices the former has to set aside to obtain strength from the latter. Moreover, given the revolutionary ideology of the PWA, her works – as those of her colleagues in the group – explored gender relations and women’s oppression by men and other women, the development of a modernist identity among women, as well as the more deleterious effects of poverty and ostracism on marginalized women.

Zard Gulab (The Yellow Rose, 1981) and Allah De Banda Le (God gives, Man takes, 1984) were two of her short story collections published posthumously.
